Strong migratory connectivity indicates Willets need subspecies-specific conservation strategies

چکیده

Abstract By combining all available banding and tracking data, we found that Willets (Tringa semipalmata) have a strong migratory connectivity between breeding nonbreeding locations at the range-wide subspecies levels, exposing two to varying threats such as hunting for eastern semipalmata climatically-altered coastal habitats both subspecies. Effective management species will likely require conservation strategies across diverse regions occupy However, more data are needed from mid-continental North America understand complete extent overlap throughout cycle. The documented here highlights need manage by protect diversity habitats, benefit other shorebird with

Migratory connectivity and population-specific migration routes in a long-distance migratory bird.

Knowledge about migratory connectivity, the degree to which individuals from the same breeding site migrate to the same wintering site, is essential to understand processes affecting populations of migrants throughout the annual cycle. Here, we study the migration system of a long-distance migratory bird, the Montagu's harrier Circus pygargus, by tracking individuals from different breeding pop...

Dynamic conservation for migratory species

In an era of unprecedented and rapid global change, dynamic conservation strategies that tailor the delivery of habitat to when and where it is most needed can be critical for the persistence of species, especially those with diverse and dispersed habitat requirements. We demonstrate the effectiveness of such a strategy for migratory waterbirds. We analyzed citizen science and satellite data to...

Optimal Conservation of Migratory Species

BACKGROUND Migratory animals comprise a significant portion of biodiversity worldwide with annual investment for their conservation exceeding several billion dollars. Designing effective conservation plans presents enormous challenges. Migratory species are influenced by multiple events across land and sea-regions that are often separated by thousands of kilometres and span international border...

Links between worlds : unraveling migratory connectivity

NH 03755-3576, USA. Migration – the regular seasonal movement of individuals, often from a breeding location to a nonbreeding location and back – is a common and taxonomically widespread phenomenon in nature, and is particularly common among birds. An important, but unresolved issue in the study of migratory birds is the extent to which individuals from the same breeding area migrate to the sam...
